about

Sphere of Influence/Steve Hunt
All fine artists and musicians have a Sphere of Influence. It comes from not only studying the monumental, work of the masters but also from life experiences. It is special to share another artist’s vision who’s sphere of influence intersects with your own. Such is the case for myself, working with Steve on this project. His vision for this project is demonstrated by great writing and performance on piano and keyboards as well as top of the line engineering and production.
We came up in the same time period of music, the late 1960’s to the present day. Miles Davis transitioning to a more fusion like sound on Bitch’s Brew, John Coltrane pushing modal boundaries with McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison, Tony Williams, Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McGlaughlin, Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham, George Duke, Frank Zappa, Weather Report, Chick Corea’s classic
trio with Miroslav and Roy then onto Return to Forever, Light as a Feather, Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage and then Head Hunters, Bill Evans’ Impressionisim in Jazz, Keith Jarrett’s jams with Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and later his European groups and the Standards Trio, Jimmy Hendrix, E.L.P., all the Motown and R&B on our parent’s radios. Classical wizards, Horowitz, Rubenstein, Gould, Stravinsky and others. In the 1970’s we played in Fusion bands bridging many of many of the influences we heard and loved.
As life goes on so does the evolution of our sphere of influence. This recording documents the current expression of our collective sphere of intersecting influences including life experiences as we see Steve Hunt’s vision to fruition.
